4 Tips to Keep Your Business Safe and Secure

Keeping information safe and secure is a challenging development for businesses of all sizes over the last few years. Expeditious shifts from in-person to online to hybrid workplaces forced companies to change, or at least reexamine, their cybersecurity practices and protocols, and far too often they weren’t prepared. In fact, according to Cyber Edge’s Cyberthreat Defense Report, 85% of organizations suffered from a successful cyberattack in 2021.

Now, businesses that have suffered cyberattacks along with companies that’ve been fortunate enough to avoid being a victim of breaches and hacks are looking at ways they can bolster their defenses and safeguard their data. But which plans, practices, and services should these organizations invest in?

Below are 4 steps businesses of all shapes and sizes can take to better protect themselves against cyber-attacks:[/cz_title]

Identify “Crown Jewels” of Your Business

Understanding what information cybercriminals are after most is essential to combating cyber-attacks. Therefore, creating an inventory list of the valuable data and assets within your organization, including manufacturer, model, hardware, and software information, is of the utmost importance. In addition, take note of who has access to important data and information while also accounting for all storage locations. This practice will ensure that business leaders have a track record of accessibility so that they know where to look in case of a vulnerability or breach.[/cz_title]

Protect Assets by Updating and Authenticating

At the end of the day, protecting your data and devices from malicious actors is what cybersecurity is all about. To accomplish this, make sure your security software is current. Investing in the most up to date software’s, web browsers, and operating systems is one of the best defenses against a host of viruses, malware, and other online threats. Furthermore, make sure these devices have automatic updates turned on, so employees aren’t tasked with manually updating devices. Additionally, make sure all data is being backed up either in the cloud or via separate hard drive storage.

Another important way to keep your assets safe is by ensuring staff are using strong authentication to protect access to accounts and ensure only those with permission can access them. This includes strong, secure, and differentiated passwords. According to a 2021 PC Mag study, 70% of people admit they use the same password for more than one account. Using weak and similar passwords makes a hacker’s life a lot easier and can give them access to more materials than they could dream of. Finally, make sure employees are using multi-factor authentication. While this may result in a few extra sign-ins, MFA is essential to safeguarding data and can be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful breach.[/cz_title]

[cz_title id=”cz_59373″]

Monitor and Detect Suspicious Activity

Companies must always be on the lookout for possible breaches, vulnerabilities, and attacks, especially in a world where many often go undetected. This can be done by investing in cybersecurity products or services that help monitor your networks such as antivirus and antimalware software. Moreover, make sure your employees and personnel are following all established cybersecurity protocols before, during, and after a breach. Individuals who ignore or disregard important cybersecurity practices can compromise not only themselves, but the entire organization. Paying close attention to whether your company is fully embracing all your cybersecurity procedures and technology is incumbent upon business leaders.

[cz_title id=”cz_63888″]

Have a Response Plan Ready

No matter how many safeguards you have in place, the unfortunate reality is that cyber incidents still occur. However, responding in a comprehensive manner will reduce risks to your business and send a positive signal to your customers and employees. Therefore, businesses should have a cyber incident response plan ready to go prior to a breach. In it, companies should embrace savvy practices such as disconnecting any affected computers from the network, notifying their IT staff or the proper third-party vendors, and utilizing any spares and backup devices while continuing to capture operational data.

[cz_gap height=”30px”][cz_title id=”cz_99764″]Cybersecurity has become one of the biggest hot topics both inside and outside of technology circles over the last two years. From securing learning devices due to a rise in digital learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to coping with the fallout of high-profile breaches of national infrastructure such as the Colonial Pipeline, there is a seemingly endless news cycle dedicated to cybersecurity mishaps and concerns.

And with this onslaught of negative news, it can be easy for everyday individuals to become overwhelmed and feel powerless in the face of the “insurmountable” threats posed by cybersecurity. But nothing could be further from the truth.

With all the jargon that is typically thrown around in relation to cybersecurity, there is a longstanding misperception that cybersecurity is beyond everyday people and that it should be left to professionals. Moreover, there is a prevailing sense among the public that breaches are simply a fact of life and that we should just learn to deal with them. But this just isn’t true. In fact, everyday people have a huge role to play in cybersecurity threat prevention, detection, and remediation. For example, according to IBM, 95% of breaches have human error as the main cause. Therefore, everyday day technology users are very much the first line of defense when it comes to thwarting cybercrime. Unfortunately, though, many individuals are not aware of some of the best practices for boosting cybersecurity and how easy they are to use.

With that, here are a few key best practices that everyday people can implement today to enhance their own cybersecurity and create a more secure world for everyone.[/cz_title]

[cz_gap height=”100px”]
[cz_gap height=”25px” height_tablet=”10px” height_mobile=”10px”][cz_image parallax_h=”true” parallax=”-6″ image=”17315″ id=”cz_57663″ sk_css=”padding-right:30px;margin:0 auto;position:relative;”][/cz_image]

For Phishing

[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”30px” id=”cz_58641″]

Phishing – when a cybercriminal poses as a legitimate party in hopes of getting individuals to engage with malicious content or links – remains one of the most popular tactics among cybercriminals today. In fact, 80% of cybersecurity incidents stem from a phishing attempt. However, while phishing has gotten more sophisticated, keeping an eye out for typos, poor graphics and other suspicious characteristics can be a tell-tale sign that the content is potentially coming from a “phish.” In addition, if you think you have spotted a phishing attempt be sure to report the incident so that internal IT teams and service providers can remediate the situation and prevent others from possibly becoming victims.

[cz_gap height=”100px”]
[cz_gap height=”40px” id=”cz_13892″ height_tablet=”30px”][cz_title bline=”cz_line_after_title” smart_fs=”true” id=”cz_78857″ sk_lines=”background-color:#ba0230;width:60px;top:0px;”]Update your Passwords or Use

a Password Manager

[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”30px” id=”cz_58641″]

Having unique, long, and complex passwords is one of the best ways to immediately boost your cybersecurity. Yet, only 43% of the public say that they “always” or “very often” use strong passwords. Password cracking is one of the go-to tactics that cybercriminals turn to access sensitive information. And if you are a “password repeater,” once a cybercriminal has hacked one of your accounts, they can easily do the same across all your accounts.

One of the biggest reasons that individuals repeat passwords is that it can be tough to remember all the passwords you have. Fortunately, by using a password manager, individuals can securely store all their unique passwords in one place. Meaning, people only must remember one password. In addition, password managers are incredibly easy to use and can automatically plug-in stored passwords when you visit a site.

Multi-Factor Authentication

[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”30px” id=”cz_58641″]

Enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) – which prompts a user to input a second set of verifying information such as a secure code sent to a mobile device or to sign-in via an authenticator app – is a hugely effective measure that anyone can use to drastically reduce the chances of a cybersecurity breach. In fact, according to Microsoft, MFA is 99.9 percent effective in preventing breaches. Therefore, it is a must for any individual that is looking to secure their devices and accounts.

[cz_gap height=”40px” id=”cz_13892″ height_tablet=”30px”][cz_title bline=”cz_line_after_title” smart_fs=”true” id=”cz_62625″ sk_lines=”background-color:#ba0230;width:60px;top:0px;”]Activate

Automatic Updates

[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”30px” id=”cz_58641″]

Making sure devices are always up-to-date with the most recent versions is essential to preventing cybersecurity issues from cropping up. Cybersecurity is an ongoing effort, and updates are hugely important in helping to address vulnerabilities that have been uncovered as well as in providing ongoing maintenance. Therefore, instead of trying to remember to check for updates or closing out of update notifications, enable automatic update installations whenever possible.

We will join a number of other organizations in the Las Vegas area in providing the resources needed to achieve two building projects that will improve the community.

With the success of last year’s initiative, which focused on building a home for one veteran in need, FOX5 is expanding the scope of their Super Build project to also include a community playground. In 2020, FOX5’s Super Build was able to team up with Habitat for Humanity to build a new home for a United States Navy veteran who was deeply affected by the recession. Forced to relocate to an apartment with rising rent he struggled to pay, he called the opportunity to once again own a home “a new beginning.” In the first half of 2021, Super Build will focus their efforts on building a community playground in partnership with Make An Impact Foundation and PlayPower, which is expected to be completed just in time for summer break.[/cz_title]

[cz_title id=”cz_19826″ cz_title=””]Having a welcoming home to spend time with friends and family, especially during the holiday season, is something many of us take for granted. That’s why in the latter half of the year, Super Build will again partner with Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas, aiming to build another home for a veteran family in need to move into just before the holidays.

As a company, it was easy for us to see that supporting the efforts of Super Build is a great opportunity for us to make a lasting positive impact in our Las Vegas community. We believe everyone deserves a comfortable place to call home, and all kids deserve a safe place to play. We truly look forward to being a part of this admirable project and getting our Las Vegas team personally involved in the builds.

We have participated in the Summer Business Food and Fund Drive since 2011, but this year presented some unique challenges. Despite this, we were proud to present Utah Food Bank with the donations made by our generous employees. During our 2020 drive, employees throughout our Utah branches donated over $15,600 dollars, 6,665 food items, and volunteered for a collective 151 hours. In the Las Vegas branch employees donated over $1,100 and 270 food items to Three Square Food Bank.

Our 2020 drive has been different from years past due to the Coronavirus outbreak, but our employees still enthusiastically participated in any way they could. The economic fallout of the pandemic meant a significant increase in the need for Utah Food Bank’s services. In fact, according to Utah Food Bank, they saw a 197% in households served versus the same period last year. It’s always our goal to make sure no child goes hungry in Utah.

Volunteering in the Utah Food Bank warehouse has always been a favorite way to participate in the Summer Business Food and Fund Drive. This year, employees were able to put on their masks and help assemble food boxes for senior citizens in need.[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”25px”]

[cz_image id=”cz_83906″ image=”14893″][/cz_image][cz_gap height=”25px”][cz_image id=”cz_22276″ image=”14894″][/cz_image][cz_gap height=”25px”][cz_title id=”cz_58614″ cz_title=””]Each Tuesday during our food drive, employees were encouraged to donate specific items, and they really pulled through every time. It resulted in our offices overflowing with items like macaroni and cheese, cereal, tuna, peanut butter, canned fruits and veggies, and more. It was exciting to see the amount of these items that were donated.[/cz_title][cz_image id=”cz_54798″ image=”14895″][/cz_image][cz_title id=”cz_52210″ cz_title=””]We love seeing how willing everyone is to contribute to the important work Utah Food Bank does, and hope to continue this tradition for a long time.[/cz_title]

[cz_title id=”cz_28745″ cz_title=””]Students who enroll in one of three IT programs at Uintah Basin Technical College will be the beneficiaries of a new scholarship donated by Les Olson Company. “The Matt Olson Memorial Scholarship will make scholarships available annually”, said Les Olson Company CEO, James Olson.

“UBTech is honored to partner with Les Olson Company in providing students pursuing a career in the IT field with this scholarship opportunity. UBTech has certification opportunities for students in the fields of Security Technician, Network Technician, and IT Support Technician,” said UBTech President Aaron K. Weight. “Les Olson is a great company that cares deeply about the communities they serve.”

Les Olson Company offers office technology products and managed IT services. The 64-year old family-owned business has offices throughout Utah and Las Vegas. The company’s UBTech IT scholarship in memory of Matt Olson is one of three they currently fund throughout the state. “Since his passing this is how we honor Matt – donating to scholarships in his name and supporting students pursuing careers in the IT field,” said Olson.[/cz_title][cz_gap height=”25px”]

[cz_title id=”cz_70744″ cz_title=””]Matt is James’ younger brother by three years. James characterized Matt as “a brilliant individual with a strong mechanical and technical mind, always quick on his feet.” Someone who loved computers, gaming and “all those nerdy things that kids like to do.” He was a snowmobile enthusiast and loved the outdoors, his brother detailed. “Matt suffered from depression, fighting the disease until it claimed his life in 2018”, Olson said. He left behind his wife, three sons, and a grandchild.

Like his brother and cousins, Matt started in the family-owned business as a youngster, sweeping floors and pulling weeds, working his way up to become the Chief Technology Officer at Les Olson Company. Matt managed the IT and software solutions departments at Les Olson Company, guiding the company’s specialized technology offerings.

“He knew that offering managed IT services and hardware would complement our business model really, really well. He and Keith Adams built that department from nothing. Now we have 60 people from sales, service, and support in our IT division,” said Les Olson Company Marketing Director, Scot Olson. “Matt envisioned the future and he knew as a business we needed to develop an IT presence – from Logan to Las Vegas. Not only a presence but to become experts in IT!” said James.

UBTech President Aaron Weight’s long-time friendship with Scot Olson, paved the way for the IT scholarship and the college’s partnership with Les Olson Company. Les Olson has provided their services in the Uintah Basin for decades. “Weight helped the company open doors and foster new relationships, further boosting Les Olson’s presence in the Uintah Basin”, said Scot Olson.

“A lot of people now know us as an IT company but that has only been for the past few years – in the state of Utah, we are the largest copier and printer dealer,” said James Olson. “Les Olson Company is always looking for good IT technicians, Sales Engineers and Support Members and offers opportunities to live in the Uintah Basin and work remotely”, said James Olson.

The company has a proud record of employee longevity because of their culture of caring for their employees. “Don’t ever take the human out of the job. That is at the core here. We believe in stepping up as a company to make sure people are taken care of,” said James Olson.

In addition to giving to higher education, Les Olson Company supports their communities by supporting several agencies, programs and treatment facilities that provide help to people who are in need of mental and behavioral health support. “We hope we make a difference,” James Olson said.[/cz_title]

Throughout the year, the Utah Food Bank receives donations from hundreds of food and fund drives hosted by various organizations, and by individuals who want to give back to the community. Because of the generosity of these businesses and individuals, the Utah Food Bank is able purchase food to distribute to pantries throughout Utah and even Mobile Pantry Trucks, which bring lots of fresh food to areas under served by traditional food pantries.

Since 2011, Les Olson Company has been hosting food and fund drives to help support the Utah Food Bank, and has been the official sponsor of the Summer Business Food and Fund Drive for several years. We also send volunteers to hand out food to elementary school students and their families at one of their Mobile Pantry trucks on a monthly basis. The Summer Food and Fund drive is a great time for our company and employees to show their generosity by donating food, money, and time by by volunteering at the Utah Food Bank Warehouse, Mobile Pantry, and delivering food boxes to senior citizens.

Our Las Vegas team has also been a long-time supporter of Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas, in order to keep their donations local to Nevada. Our amazing employees and their families donated over 20,000 food items, $27,000 dollars, and volunteered a collective 179 hours. Did you know that food pantries can take a dollar that is donated, and turn it into $7.34 of food and services for those in need? Through the buying power of food pantries that means nearly $200,000 worth of food was purchased through the cash donations made by Les Olson Company Employees this summer.

This was a great experience for us to see and to interact with many kids and their families who benefit from Utah Food Bank and Three Square’s efforts. We at Les Olson Company believe that no kid should feel unsure about where their next meal will come from. We are proud to support the Utah Food Bank and Three Square’s activities, and encourage any business or individual to donate and give a helping hand, so together we can have a bigger impact in our community.
